About Us

Victoria, BC, Canada
This blog began as a modern "baby book" for our first child, Finlay, who was born in December of 2010. The recent addition of Seamus, born in January of 2013, has meant continued efforts to put into words and pictures his early years. We also use this forum to catalog our family life: two loving partners, two beautiful kids, car-free, child-centred, attachment-focused, with a love of food and health thrown into the mix!

Newborn-Motherhood

December 18, 2010

First of all, thanks to all of the folks out there who have been sending us happy messages, kind words, funny ecards, helping hands (dishes, groceries, gift baskets, take-out, etc.) and overall vibes of excitement and interest in our new family.  We are overwhelmed by all of the love out there!

So, it has taken me a couple days to be up to much outside of taking care of Finlay and myself.  I really want to share a bit about my take on the labour and birth.

I was getting pretty anxious for the baby to arrive.  I went to the acupuncturist on Monday evening and she said something that made me decide to just tell the baby that tomorrow was going to be its birthday.

I talked to the baby and told it about the cake I would make it and about how it would share a birthday with its great-grandfather and that it was supposed to be a stormy day which is how I always pictured its first day.

Well, to my relief and excitement, contractions began at about 4am on Tuesday.  I waited an hour to be sure and then woke up Tyler so that he could be in on the excitement.  I said, "Tyler, it's Chick's birthday today!"

We slept through the rest of the morning.  We got up and started making Pumpkin-Chocolate Chip cupcakes for the birthday.  We tried to finish up some cleaning and Tyler set-up the bed and the tub for the labour and birth.  We called the midwife and went to an appointment mid-morning and I was only 1 cm dilated but she agreed that labour had begun.  She recommended we relax and enjoy the day because we could be at this stage for a day or two.  I smiled and said, "Today is Chick's birthday, we'll call you later with updates."  And home we went.

We ate lunch as soon as we were in and decided to nap as neither of us had had a very good sleep that night. We had only been in bed for a few minutes when my water broke and active labour began.  At this point, I remember jumping into the shower and shouting for Tyler to call Uta and Tanesha and then I went into what is called "labour-land."  I have no timeline here and very little memory of it.

I know that the mid-wife and the doula were there shortly and my cheer-leading team was quickly assembled.  There was Tyler and his massages and offering me a glass full of water or coconut water and many encouraging words.  There was Tanesha with lots of yay-yous and suggestions for dealing with the sensations.  There was Uta giving me updates on how I was doing and offering homeopathics and direction for my mind-body connection.

I kept thinking that every contraction was one more closer to meeting the baby.  I kept telling myself "I can do this.  I am made for this.  This is hard work but there is no turning back now!"

Uta told us the following day that if we had gone with a doctor in hospital we would have had to have a c-section.  The baby was big and I am small.  I progressed through the pushing really slowly and the H-bomb (going to hospital) was mentioned that night.  At that point, I really had to focus and put in every ounce of energy I had left.

I really fell into doubt near the end, though.  I was more tired than I had ever been in my life.  I was really unsure if I could finish what I'd started.  But then everyone in the room got really excited and there was a second midwife, Sarah.  Uta and Sarah were warming blankets and getting out their equipment and Tanesha started to really give some more serious direction and I told myself "this is it - you are having a baby now!"

We got to see the baby be born and a lot was going through my mind!  One thought I couldn't help but mention was - "holy cow that is a big baby!"

The baby was given a rub-down and the midwifes started to say "Tyler, what is it?" (referring to the baby's sex).  "It's a boy?" he said with some doubt.  "YES!" the room said back.

He didn't cry at all.  He was just squirming and looking around.  He was looking at me!  I couldn't hold him though; my arms were completely useless with exhaustion.  I started to go cross-eyed and couldn't focus on anything.

After some juice and birthday cake and a shower I was ready to cuddle with my son.  We named him Finlay McKinnon Grant.  Finlay came about in a discussion on a CBC Radio 3 program, which is a story on its own.  McKinnon is my mother's maiden name and Grant is Tyler's mother's last name.  A strong Scottish name for a little boy with some special Scottish background.

During these past days I can't help but beam with joy in my little miracle, but also in the elation that I did it - I did a natural labour and birth at home, just like I wanted to, with 300,000 other women around the world on December 14, 2010.  I am part of something really special and I am really proud of my experience.  I will cherish it forever!  And the best part of all is the outcome; a healthy baby!

Pictures Pictures Pictures

So we have had quite the busy past 24 hours since last we posted.  And let us tell you, it is hard to believe that it has only been that long. But we have been able to get some more pictures taken and put up for you all to see.
Enjoy!

 Just hanging out with Fin...
Finlay's nails are getting long already so he gets some very fashionable scratch mittens!
We decided it might be fun to take Finlay for a ride around the apartment in his stroller.  He really seemed to enjoy it!
 He just fell asleep!
Mom and Finlay.  What a cute pair!
 Cute little Finlay

Finlay and Dad took a bath together.
Mom drying Finlay off after the bath
Dad and Finlay have a little nap on the couch!  Sleep time is something we both love.
 Aren't they both so cute!
This is Tanesha. She is our doula and dropped by on Thursday to see how we were doing.  She was absolutely fantastic during the labour and was with us almost the entire time.  Such an amazing person. Lyndze loved having her around
Dad and Finlay sharing a bath together.
This was a new experience for us both but I think it went really well.
We just floated around for a few minutes in some warm water.  I loved it!
I am not sure Finlay was convinced
These pics are kinda out of order.  But here we are back on the couch napping

Our dear friend Hilary was so wonderful as to grab us some groceries on Thursday night!  She seemed to really like Finlay.
She also did the gigantic pile of dishes that had built up and were staring at Tyler every time he walked into the kitchen.  So thankyou Hilary!
Mom, Dad and Finlay... The happy, albeit tired, family

As we go we will try to get some more pics up for you to see.

See you soon!

Welcome Finlay McKinnon Grant!

Hi folks!

We are super excited to let everyone know that on Dec 14th at 11:17pm  we welcomed Finlay into the world.  We had a lot of help from our primary midwife Uta Harold as well as a new midwife to Canada that joined us later on in the process named Sara. She has been a midwife in the UK for a long time but is transferring to practice in Canada and our Doula named Tanesha.  I take the time to mention them because they were so amazing and supportive in our goals for the birth,  But we will put up more detailed information in the near future but for now we wanted to let you know that mum, dad and baby are happy and healthy and we are just spending a few days hanging out in bed together getting to know each other.

Finlay came in weighing 9lbs 4 ounces, is 22.2 inches long (with 3 inch long feet!) and is 100% cute!

We've posted some of the pics we have on the blog.  As we find time to take more we will add them up or find a way to get them to you.   In the mean time send your good thoughts our way as we get used to our new lives as a family.

Lots of love

Tyler, Lyndze and Finlay  (a.k.a Chick)

After a good amount of snuggle time with Mom and Dad; Finlay was off to get his stats done.

Here is Uta, our midwife, measuring Finlay.  22.5 inches long

Finlay's had some large feet.

Here is Uta weighing Finlay... Although you cannot see him, he is indeed snuggled inside that bag.

This is Fin on his first day alone with mom and dad... Too cute

 Finlay getting all tidied up!

Just about to get weighed...

Fin was known for being quite the kicker when he called Mom's tummy his home... As you can see from the swaddle blanket looks like, nothing much has changed...
Fin getting re-swaddled after the measurements...

This is a picture of our bedroom... We were lucky enough to do the entire labour in the house and most of it took place in this cozy little place. It really was a nice experience for all of us.

Our Maternity Photos

November 27, 2010

Well, we are into the last few days before Chick arrives.  We have come a long way!  It's been 270 days, or over 38 weeks, or about 9 months and we are very excited to meet our baby.  Tyler is most excited to touch the baby's little hands.  I am most excited to look into her/his eyes.  Our most recent appointment with Uta went well.  We told her about Chick's yoga stretches and she said that it's a sign of contentment and health.  She also reassured me that, despite the lack of sleep, I will be fine when it comes down to the labour because I'm healthy and I'm made for it!  The book I'm reading right now really summed it up for me: "Labour is hard work, it hurts a lot, and you can do it."  I think I'm ready to go!

As I mentioned in our last post, we had some maternity photos taken a couple weeks ago.  As promised, I am sharing some of our favourites below.

We hope that you all have enjoyed the journey with us!  Soon, the name of the blog will change when we welcome our little one who, once on the outside, will be known by a new name.  We'll continue to write and post pictures of the baby as soon as we can!

Sneak Peek!

November 22, 2010

Tyler and I had some photos taken by a photographer friend about a week ago.  Just in time too!  It was a nice, warm and sunny day and the belly was behaving.  Now it is snowy, cold and windy and the belly looks more like a baby is hiding under some skin.  We were going to be getting the pictures today but our friend is snowed in (Victoria style) but she sent a "sneak peek" - I don't usually like pictures that involve me but this is nice.  Can't wait to see the rest - we will be sharing!

At this point I'm feeling like there is no room left for this kid.  Chick seems to disagree and continues to do yoga stretching.  Cute, but a tad uncomfortable!  Uta comes to the apartment tomorrow for a home visit and to make sure we are all set with what we need for the big event.  Tyler has done most of the shopping and preparing for this.  He loves his lists and getting organized.  If anyone is curious or concerned about this midwife or homebirth stuff, please check out Uta's website: http://www.sookemidwifery.com/
Her mother was a midwife and she has been delivering babies since 1981, over 2400 births!  She makes us feel very comfortable and well taken care of.

Weird, but I went to the chiropractor today and she said that the next time I see her I'll probably have had the baby.  That was pretty exciting!  I guess that sort of thing will happen more often now.  Hopefully we'll get a couple more posts into the blog before Chick gets here!

Ready to Hatch!

November 16, 2010

We went to the midwife yesterday.  It feels like we are there a lot because we are at the point where we go weekly.  Anyway, we have been given the go-ahead for the home-birth.  The pregnancy is now a 37 weeks which means Chick is fully cooked and just putting on ounces and practicing breathing and swallowing and being cute so the s/he is ready for the outside.  Uta thinks that Chick will be 7 or 8 pounds and that s/he will choose a birthday before the actual due date.  She said that Chick is engaged and in the perfect position for birth.  Also, the heart-rate is starting to lower and this is a sign of maturity and preparation for birth.

Chick is more and more interactive each day.  Her/his bum is below Lyndze's left ribs and her/his feet are kicking into her right ribs or out the right side.  We can pat Chick's bum and her/his little feet will start kicking.  Chick seems to enjoy foot rubs.  Occasionally, s/he will get the hiccups!  This jolts Lyndze awake.  Little hands have been feeling around her right hip and the little baby doesn't seem to agree that there is no room left and continues to practice yoga stretches.

Uta agrees that the personality of our little Chick seems rather independent and calm.  We would also add playful to the description!

Lyndze is feeling rather large and sore and tired.  Very excited though!

The car-seat is in the car, the tub is ordered, the food is being stockpiled in the freezer and two eager parents-to-be are cleaning and nesting any way we can.

The count-down is on!  20 days until the due-date and Uta suspects less than that until Chick is hatched!

The diaper changing area, and Chick's dresser, all ready to go.

Tyler put the shelf up and we have some toys, some disposables, our cloth pre-folds and cloth wipes.
Chick's closet has blankets and extra cloth diapers, the stroller and some other supplies.

The round belly is becoming a thing of the past.  Most of the time you can make out the bumpy outline of a baby!
