About Us

Victoria, BC, Canada
This blog began as a modern "baby book" for our first child, Finlay, who was born in December of 2010. The recent addition of Seamus, born in January of 2013, has meant continued efforts to put into words and pictures his early years. We also use this forum to catalog our family life: two loving partners, two beautiful kids, car-free, child-centred, attachment-focused, with a love of food and health thrown into the mix!

Our First Thanksgiving Day

October 10, 2011

After a wonderful weekend away in Nanoose Bay we are back home.  We celebrated our first Thanksgiving as a family with some family up island.  The weather on Sunday was lovely but we wanted to wait until Monday to go back to Nanoose edibles and walk around the farm (our Thanksgiving tradition).  Unfortunately, it poured rain and was really windy on Monday, so we stayed inside.

(Great) Auntie Chris and (Great) Uncle Mike were wonderful hosts.  Dinner was delicious, the wine and beer were plentiful and the conversation was as interesting as the company (very).

Finlay ate before we did, as he had a bedtime to attend.  He seemed to enjoy his dinner very much!

Fin had some yams, brussel sprouts, black beans, and a delicious rice stuffing I made for he and I.  Our doctor has us trying a gluten-free diet for a while to see if it helps Fin with his digestion.  The stuffing was really tasty but I did miss Tofurkey (which is mostly wheat) and pie.  I made Fin and I a healthy raw dessert that was sugarless and gluten-free.  As I'm writing this, it sounds disappointing and unappealing but it was actually pretty tasty with apples, cinnamon, apples, maple syrup, lemon, and cardamom.

Fin really pounded back everything on his plate.  He really enjoyed every bite!  Lately, when he doesn't like something, he tends to play with it more than eat it.

A glass of home-made hemp milk to wash it all down!

He went for the yams first.  They were baked here but, later for the adults, Chris dressed them with some spices and they were sweet and very tasty.

As I was saying, it rained on Monday, so we spent the day inside and there was lots of fun to be had.  Finlay loved to show off his standing with the assistance of the coffee table and he was crawling and interacting with all of the fun and new-ish people.

Most people say that Finlay looks just like his dad.  But his Nans, Gramps, and my grandparents all see me in his sweet little face.  Tyler and I have trouble seeing it because it is difficult to remember what I looked like as a baby when I am looking at my own baby all day.  But, Auntie Chris brought out an album and the pictures of me look like Finlay with red hair.  The expressions we share are uncannily.  Finlay likes to look at pictures of himself and other babies.  He was pretty interested in the pictures of his mama.

It was a very nice Thanksgiving for all of us!
