About Us

Victoria, BC, Canada
This blog began as a modern "baby book" for our first child, Finlay, who was born in December of 2010. The recent addition of Seamus, born in January of 2013, has meant continued efforts to put into words and pictures his early years. We also use this forum to catalog our family life: two loving partners, two beautiful kids, car-free, child-centred, attachment-focused, with a love of food and health thrown into the mix!

Juan de Fuca Camping

July 2015

We have just returned from a lovely 4-day weekend camping at French Beach, which is on the South-West side of the Island.  Although me and Tyler are at our end with 'car-camping' or 'glamping', the kids still aren't quite ready for the real thing.  This spot was pretty close, though.

Our site was quite private, and had this amazing old growth stump that was hollowed out.  In the photo above, Tyler is on top of the stump but Fin and Shay are inside of it!  You can see a little light in the centre and that is one of the kids with their lamp.

Fin and Shay could go in through the 'door' at the bottom of the stump.

This photo of Shay is taken from the top of the inside.

Both kids inside... and Ty's knee.

To Fin's left, his 'window.'

Looking out of the window.

Another window near the top.

It's a long way down!

'My window!' says Shay.

A nice view for Fin - and our site in the rear.

They spent hours in the stump, or 'tree house' - win.

Shay is still learning to potty.  He did not like the pit-toilets.  Who does?  So we just gave up on pants.  Who likes pants anyway?

He is pretty cute sans pants.

At the beach.
It was lovely, we could hear the ocean all night.  There were BIG waves and a lot of undertow.  Different than the beaches near home.

Friends came to play!

Fin really likes babies.

It was really nice to have some friends around!

We went on a 2km hike to Mystic Beach.  Mystic is a special place for Tyler and I.  We spent many days off from camp resting on the beach, nourishing our bodies with good food and sun and sleep.

It was a bit of a stretch, hiking in with the kids, but I wore Shay and Fin hiked the ENTIRE way there!  He really loved this 'wobbly bridge'!

A break for granola bars and fruit and WATER along the trail.

"Hey, Fin and Shay!  I am trying for a nice photo of the two of you.  Can you quit scratching your bums?"

"Are you scratching more?"

"Fin!  Yuck!  Stop!"
(translates into 4-year-old as "you are hilarious.  please continue!")

Fine.  I will take a waist up shot.

Fin saw a waterfall and the clothes were off.

He followed the water to this stream.

To the ocean...

Then, he had an idea.

Pick up the wet sand and....

Throw it really hard at the rock wall and the waterfall.

"This is brilliant!" said Shay (in his mind).

I don't need a hat for this business.

I don't need anything!

We are going to win!  (they lost me).

First, we pee.

Then, we get sand.

Lots of sand in our little hands...

So fun!

Then we run so fast.

We bail and just get right back up again.

FUUUUUUNNNNNN!

The kicked the rock-cliff-waterfall's ass.  Now it was time to throw sand into the ocean.

Scare the ocean.  Check.

Throw sand.  Check.

Look cute.  Check.

The wave is getting away!

It'll be back, and we'll be ready.
(You wanna piece of this?)

There were naked, happy kids, sunshine and waves.

It was a good day.

Not bad to look at.

Oh, and a rope swing.

Some of you may recognize this pose.
"Hey Shay, I'm NOT taking your picture."

Ha!  Gotcha!

The we (Tyler and I) hiked back to our site, ate pizza, and went to sleep (well, not Seamus).
