About Us

Victoria, BC, Canada
This blog began as a modern "baby book" for our first child, Finlay, who was born in December of 2010. The recent addition of Seamus, born in January of 2013, has meant continued efforts to put into words and pictures his early years. We also use this forum to catalog our family life: two loving partners, two beautiful kids, car-free, child-centred, attachment-focused, with a love of food and health thrown into the mix!

A Kick and a Heartbeat

June 27, 2012

Today I picked Finlay up from daycare early and we went to our midwife appointment together.  When I was pregnant with "Chick," Tyler got to come to almost every midwifery appointment.  But Uta pointed out to us today that the first baby is for you (the parents) and the second is a sibling for the first.  So I guess it was fitting for Fin to be there after all.

With "Chick," the first heartbeat was easy to find.  Uta put the scope on me and boom-boom, there it was, clear, calm, and present.  Uta's first assessment/prediction for this little "Chick" was that it would be a calm, present person.  This has held true!  Finlay has his moments but he is generally calm and present.

The next baby, "Billy," is acting a little differently.  When Uta put the scope on, there was no heartbeat but a kick, and another kick-kick. Uta would move the scope around to find the heartbeat but the baby would move and she would lose that fast little pumping sound.  It was difficult to hear more than a few beats before Billy would kick and move away.  A Billy-Goat indeed!  This one is playful, unpredictable, and wild!  Tyler and I are in for it!

Oh, yes, and the remaining update is that they have, once again, changed the due date.  We are looking at January 15th again.  Does it matter?  Not really.  Only 5% of babies are born on their due date.  But since we are looking to have a homebirth again, and you have to be 37 weeks or more to have one, the due date can impact things.  Also, in Victoria, they will induce anyone over 42 weeks.  So the late due date lowers my chances of that!

Looking forward to the new year already!

Introducing "Billy"

June 24, 2012

As you can see from the updated title of our Blog, there will soon be an addition to the Harvey-Roach-Grant clan!  We are expecting baby number two, who we have nicknamed "Billy" (as in a baby goat), sometime in January 2013.  The original due date was the 8th, which was cool because it was the same due date my mother had with me.  But after an early ultrasound the due date has been moved to the 12th.  Either way, I'll be getting a fabulous 30th birthday gift!

We understand that this announcement may come as a surprise to some of you.  We haven't told many people yet and thought that, rather than calling/emailing/facebooking many individuals who we would like to tell we would use the blog as a venue for the announcement.  We feel that it is mostly our family and close friends that view the blog so it made sense to us to have the word spread from here.

So the focus of the blog will be shifting, over the next several months, from Finlay the lone toddler to Finlay the soon-to-be big brother and his soon-to-be sibling "Billy."

As of today, I am 11 weeks pregnant and feeling as good as one can at 11 weeks following a gruelling 10 week work schedule of 70 hours a week.  I was pretty nauseous (way more than with Fin/Chick) and encountered some incredible exhaustion that I had never known before.  Seriously, I had never felt that tired even when, last summer, Finlay refused to sleep for more than 50 minutes at a time for weeks on end. But, my energy levels are coming back, the constant sea-sickness is subsiding, and I am back to 35 hours a week at work.  Life is good.

As I mentioned, I had an ultrasound last week and Billy is already cute!  No pictures with this ultrasound, but I can say that I saw movement and some little fingers and toes wiggling.  The ultrasound was normal and everything is progressing well.

Finlay had his first encounter with a stomach bug and Tyler and I had our first encounter with being sick with a sick kid.  We were all eating little and sleeping lots for about 5 days.  It was miserable!  Finlay couldn't even walk, he was so weak and out of it.  We missed our little guy.  His whole personality changed.  But, he was a trooper!  He barely cried, signed 'hurt' a lot, and just cuddled and watched a lot of his favourite show "Nanalan.'"

We are all back to normal now.  Although, Fin's cheeks seem smaller.

Here is Fin in a video before he got sick - he and his fabulous nanny/friend Emily are playing with a Newt at the lake.  It's a short clip but I thought I'd include it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qY7N0VZJCFQ

The second day Fin was home sick, he seemed to be doing okay, so I popped in from work to check on him and Tyler and play blocks.  I'm in my work get-up...  Finlay really like the blocks these days!

And knocking them over!

Playing on the stairs in the cabin.  There is a little window into the kitchen and Fin really enjoys this vantage point.  He gets giddy about seeing me or Tyler in the kitchen below.

Finlay dancing at home with a cape and no pants.  Pants come off when he gets in the door.  Here is a short clip of Finlay twirling: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vr3L-D8h8fQ

Daddy was making fake snoring noises on the couch and Finlay thought this was really funny.  I snapped some shots of him as he watched and reacted.

"What is up with that guy?"

"He's awake!  So funny!"

It's Been A While

June 11, 2012

So, it's been a while since we last signed off.  My camp season is in full swing and I have been working hard.  Any spare moment has been spent hanging out with Finlay or Tyler or both (rarely together, unfortunately) or sleeping.  I have been feeling under-the-weather lately but I have a feeling that will turn around soon and my role at camp changes to a less intense one in about two weeks.  So, we will have more blogs to post come summer.

Finlay has been changing a lot lately!  He is starting to say some words, such as "no," "water," "mama," and signing a lot more with new words such as "hurt."  He is also just talking in baby-talk which sounds a lot like words and sentences these days.

He has mastered walking and he is taking up some new challenges like walking backwards, running, and somersaulting!  When we play on the bed he likes to do a downward-dog type position and then I tuck his head and push his bum over and he somersaults!  He loves it and is now trying to do it on his own!

Finlay spends much of his days exploring outdoors, tasting all sorts of rocks, throwing rocks, looking for rocks to carry, and talking about rocks.  He played in the lake the other day and even touched a Newt!

Here are some pictures from a visit to the beach we took a couple of weeks ago and some from around camp!

Finlay is getting to know his Potty.  He likes to sit on it with his diaper on.  If you ask him where poop goes he points at his potty.

Mama hugs!

Watching "NanaLan'" on the iPad.

Having lunch on the back porch at camp!  A beautiful sunny day and a perfect place to play!

Back in Victoria, we walked to the beach one morning with hot drinks and some bakery snacks.

Finlay was in rock heaven.

Throwing rocks.

It's challenging to walk on the beach for us, so very challenging for Fin.  There were a few falls.  But with a fall comes a hug and a kiss to make it better.

There he goes!

Beach babe.

Super Fin = Super Fun

Most of May, 2012

Auntie Carr here with this next blog that is about three weeks late, but not for lack of trying.
The month of May was spent introducing Finlay to camp life at Thunderbird.  We ate a lot of meals in the increasingly busy, noisy, and fun dining hall with so many big kids to observe and so many camp staff who would sing songs, put on skits, and generally entertain Finlay until all hearts were content.

We spent the weeks up at camp hiking, canoeing, and throwing rocks... whilst the weekends were spent in Victoria at the park, entertaining Nans and Gramps when they were visiting, and going for long walks where we saw lots of dogs.  At camp, Fin loves to stop and touch the bark of a tree or moss that is growing, he likes to touch the leaves of the trees, and climb up and down the stairs and open and shut doors.  He seems to understand most of what we say to him - one beautifully sunny day in Victoria I was sitting on the balcony enjoying a frothy beverage and Fin was very happy to deliver chips to me one-by-one from the coffee table inside to my open hand on the balcony.  We both enjoyed this game thoroughly.

Revealing his super identity...to himself.

Learning to fly is fun!

Super Fin! Saving the world!

Lot's of dancing, singing, laughing, and clapping.  This kid is so close to talking it is amazing. He changes so much everyday and I can only imagine how different he is now that I write this blog and he is three weeks older.  The best was when he would let me snuggle up with his blankie, I would be super tired from chasing him around all day and he would of course be wired.  I would jokingly take blankie and pretend to be sleeping on the floor and he would come over and pat my head and if I tried to "wake up" he would push my head back onto blankie and tuck me in for my nap.  We took good care of each other and it was really hard to say farewell.  But I will be back for a visit just as soon as I can.
