About Us

Victoria, BC, Canada
This blog began as a modern "baby book" for our first child, Finlay, who was born in December of 2010. The recent addition of Seamus, born in January of 2013, has meant continued efforts to put into words and pictures his early years. We also use this forum to catalog our family life: two loving partners, two beautiful kids, car-free, child-centred, attachment-focused, with a love of food and health thrown into the mix!

Almost Two (2)

December 2, 2012

Finlay is almost 2 years old.  Tyler and I almost have two children.  Two (2)!

Both are pretty hard to believe.  Finlay surprises us constantly.  The learning curve (for all of us) is steep.
But it is all pretty fun(ny).

Fin is becoming more independent, more autonomous, more of a problem-solver, but also more prone to emotional melt-downs.  Tyler and I are trying more and more to step back, give him some space, let him try the task (the worst that'll happen is we'll have to help), and try our best to keep our mouths shut sometimes.

Finlay wants to try the big kids stuff.  He loves to help.  "I cook!" he says any time we are preparing dinner.  Last night he wanted to help so he and Tyler baked the scones.  He measures and counts, "one, two, three, four, one!"  He tastes everything a little bit.  If we say "I'll do this part, you watch" it does not go over well.  So he tries and we take turns with the pastry blender, the measuring cup, pouring the milk...  We are learning to work together.

A short video of Finlay cooking:

Last night, Finlay was finished dinner, excused himself and hopped down from his chair.  "Are you going to play?" we asked.  "No.  I go park." he replied.  The following 20 minutes we hilarious.  At first I was just shocked that he pulled his hat out, put it on, and pulled his boots out and put them on all by himself! Then, I went to get the iPAD to film the rest.  Unfortunately, I had my hand over the speaker for a good chuck of both videos that I took, to it is difficult to hear!  Sorry!

Finlay wanted to go to the park, in the dark, in the rain, in the cold.

He just got himself ready and told us what was up and tried to escape!

Here he is, putting on his boots.  They were on the wrong feet but I was still impressed.  Here is the second video as it has less of my hand over the speaker.  At the end, I ask Tyler, "What are we going to do?"  Finlay understands so much of what we say and ask but he just didn't seem to agree that is wasn't the time to go to the park.  So, so glad we just watched this play out.  He was fine shortly after this and agreed that we would see the park tomorrow morning and put away all of his outdoor clothes, carefully making sure his boots stood upright on the mat, and went to have his bath.
