About Us

Victoria, BC, Canada
This blog began as a modern "baby book" for our first child, Finlay, who was born in December of 2010. The recent addition of Seamus, born in January of 2013, has meant continued efforts to put into words and pictures his early years. We also use this forum to catalog our family life: two loving partners, two beautiful kids, car-free, child-centred, attachment-focused, with a love of food and health thrown into the mix!

A Kick and a Heartbeat

June 27, 2012

Today I picked Finlay up from daycare early and we went to our midwife appointment together.  When I was pregnant with "Chick," Tyler got to come to almost every midwifery appointment.  But Uta pointed out to us today that the first baby is for you (the parents) and the second is a sibling for the first.  So I guess it was fitting for Fin to be there after all.

With "Chick," the first heartbeat was easy to find.  Uta put the scope on me and boom-boom, there it was, clear, calm, and present.  Uta's first assessment/prediction for this little "Chick" was that it would be a calm, present person.  This has held true!  Finlay has his moments but he is generally calm and present.

The next baby, "Billy," is acting a little differently.  When Uta put the scope on, there was no heartbeat but a kick, and another kick-kick. Uta would move the scope around to find the heartbeat but the baby would move and she would lose that fast little pumping sound.  It was difficult to hear more than a few beats before Billy would kick and move away.  A Billy-Goat indeed!  This one is playful, unpredictable, and wild!  Tyler and I are in for it!

Oh, yes, and the remaining update is that they have, once again, changed the due date.  We are looking at January 15th again.  Does it matter?  Not really.  Only 5% of babies are born on their due date.  But since we are looking to have a homebirth again, and you have to be 37 weeks or more to have one, the due date can impact things.  Also, in Victoria, they will induce anyone over 42 weeks.  So the late due date lowers my chances of that!

Looking forward to the new year already!
